Advancements in technology have enabled today's industries to embrace Computer-Aided Drafting and Design in ways never thought possible. ECPI University's computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) program provides the technical skills needed to enter various engineering fields. As a student, you can expect to problem-solve your way through different engineering systems using industry-standard computer design software and equipment.

Computer-aided design (CAD) drafters are employable across multiple industries. You can work with architects and engineers to design and create 2D and 3D computer models of buildings and machine parts from blueprints or from scratch. As a CAD drafter, you can help create everything from home furniture to microchips to space satellites.

This certificate provides a program of study with courses in CAD (computer aided drafting) and solid modeling needed to assist the engineering and drafting activities of industry, construction, architecture, and consultants in planning, designing, and detailing projects. Rapid Prototyping techniques, like 3D printing, woodworking, casting and molding, are taught throughout the solid modeling courses. This CAD Certificate is part of the Digital Design and Modeling Subplan of the 60-credit hour Associate in Science degree in Engineering Technology. Some of these courses can also be taken as electives in the Building Design and Construction Management AS degree program. Students new to this field will be able to obtain employment by completing this certificate and work in those areas where CAD technicians, drafters, and designers are needed.

This program emphasizes current technological needs in the drafting industry and is designed to prepare students for an entry-level career as a CAD operator working for architects, interior designers, or other professionals in related fields. This program will teach you about 2D and 3D computer-aided drafting and design and models utilizing industry-standard CAD, Revit, and BIM software, computer numerical control (CNC) programming, and basic manufacturing processes using American standards (ANSI). You will learn how to produce sketches, layouts, drawings, and various views that are compliant with standard industry practices.

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) program is designed to prepare students as drafting technicians. Students will learn Computer Aided Design to develop skills in completing orthographic layouts, dimensioning, 2D and 3D computer aided drafting, and 3D printing all using American standards (ANSI). The program emphasizes current technological needs in the drafting industry. Students may apply these courses towards the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Drafting and Design Technology (3504).

Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) is primarily used for detailed engineering of 3D models and/or 2D drawings of physical components, but it is also used throughout the engineering process from conceptual design and layout, through strength and analysis of concepts to the definition of manufacturing or building methods or components. This curriculum prepares students to apply technical skills and advanced computer software and hardware to develop plans and related documentation and manage the hardware and software of a CAD system. Courses include instruction in architectural drafting, computer-assisted drafting, and design (CADD), creating and managing two and three-dimensional models, and linking CAD documents to other software applications and operating systems. Graduates should qualify for CAD jobs in architectural and engineering firms and industrial design businesses.

A student's success in high school and their willingness to learn in college will directly affect their chances of success in the computer-aided drafting field. Other essential skills needed to get a job using CAD include good math skills, working well with others, a learning mindset, industry-specific knowledge, and self-discipline.

CADD helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists and other elements using specialized computer programs. CAD software helps designers improve their productivity, as well as quality of design and communications through documentation. This electronic design automation helps extensively in the automotive, shipbuilding and aerospace industries, as well as in industrial and architectural design. Computer-aided drafting and design can even be used to assist with the production of special effects in movies, advertising and technical manuals.

Computer aided design and drafting is important because it can help lower product development costs and greatly shorten design cycles by saving designers time. Designers can lay out and develop their work on screen, print it out and save it for future editing.

This degree prepares you to pursue a career in computer aided design/drafting or transfer to continue your education. This degree option gives you the flexibility to enter the industry at the entry-level and begin working right away or transfer to a four-year degree program at another school.

The Computer Aided Drafting program can be completed in nine months (one academic year). All courses are directly related to the career. The program will expose students to drafting, emphasizing CADD as it relates to mechanical, civil and piping. The program is broad-based so that the preparation will allow students to advance in the field as technical designers. Upon completion of the certificate, students may additionally elect to complete studies at the associate degree level.

Graduates of the 18-month program receive training in a full range of knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the diverse and varied field of drafting and design. This degree is widely accepted as the industry standard in qualifying for an entry level position in the architectural, civil, and mechanical CAD fields.

Over the last few decades, the drafting, design, and manufacturing industries have become heavily computerized. The Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) programs offered by BCCC are structured to prepare a segment of the workforce to compete for jobs in these industries.

Initially, Rebecca was worried that her creative talents in music might not translate into the skills required for the interior design industry, but she quickly found her calling in computer aided design.

Rebecca explains that computer-aided drafting (also known as computer assisted drafting and computer aided design) is a type of software that assists with the design process in all types of industries.

ACC offers Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs in interior design and mechatronics, which are both popular next steps with CAD drafting students. For those interested in architecture or engineering, it is possible to transfer to another institution to continue with their education.

High-tech industries are constantly creating new career opportunities in exciting, highly-specialized fields. A degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) can provide you with both an educational foundation in computer-aided design and insight into current industry practices.

All manufacturing industries, research and development organizations, and design divisions of major corporations use drafters in the preparation of various stages of formal drawings. Typically, companies that hire engineers, architects or designers have a need for people skilled in drafting. The Computer-Aided Drafting Technology Program at Lee College prepares a person for an entry-level position as a junior drafter, drafter trainee, or drafter using computer aided drafting (CAD).
